Karen Jennings --Ceramic Artist

Karen Jennings portrays the flora and fauna of Hawaii through large free form clay murals, unique assemblages popular for their brightly colored glazes and unusual sectional design.
My special glazing techniques are inspired by the shimmering iridescence and ever changing light of Hawaii. I try to capture the dappled effect of sparkling sunlight and shadow. Each section is hand cut from rolled slabs of wet clay, then brushed with my personally formulated glazes. The pieces are then fired to stoneware temperatures (about 2300 degrees) in a large gas updraft kiln, which creates further variations in color." For interior and exterior; swimming pools, walls, exotic tropicals, animals and Hawaiian designs. Karen has a strong background in graphic design, as well as the technical expertise to work within the demanding limits of ceramics, earning a Master of Fine Arts at the university of Hawaii. After working professionally for 20 years, she encounters very few surprises. 'I accept that clay has a rhythm of its own and I don't work against it; I have to know my medium and have complete technical command of it, but also be able to move beyond this in order to express a personal vision rather than mere mechanical competence.  Karen at a eception in her honor..
The pieces are easily shipped and mounted in place. Usually your piece will be backed with a wood block so it can be hung like a picture. However, you can also have your art work mounted directly on a wall, in a shower, as flooring, in a Jacuzzi or swimming pool. Karen is happy to create a design especially for you, as well as customize the color of existing designs.
